Not a good idea.

BUY: Signature Series 1 Goldust

It was the first overhaul repaint of the BCA Goldust figure (as opposed to the Series 3 "slightly-modified" repaint) and it was a standout of the first foray into BCA facsimile signatures for Jakks Pacific. In terms of importance to the Signature Series, it may be second only to Stone Cold's first street gear "Austin 3:16" figure (also from Series 1).

The gold and purple theme for Series 1 seems like a custom fit for The Golden One, and you really can't go wrong with displaying this moc ("mint on card") or loose.

If you're unable to nab the King of the Ring Break Down Series Goldust figure first (since it's essentially the same figure, but with a flashy robe), do yourself a favor and add this figure to your BCA or Goldust figure collection pronto.

CONSIDER: Slammers Series 2 Kane

Everyone should know by now that a 6-inch Kane figure was a BIG deal in 1998. Sure, there was the Ripped and Ruthless Series 2 sculpt with removable mask which came out first, but the then-existing void without a BCA Kane could not be filled due to the scale difference.

Then, alas, there was Slammers Series 2! It was by no means an answer to our superficial figure problems, but it was progress made toward a common collecting goal.

Sadly, Jakks never enhanced the initial BCA Kane sculpt and only proceeded to re-release it countless times or make minor alterations to the attire. The first all-BCA Kane (meaning, with no Slammers action feature included) was released in Superstars Series 8 and I would recommend that above Slammers Series 2 to anyone, but remember Slammers Series 2 was the first Kane figure of its kind.

That's what makes it intriguing, but I'll leave that up to you to decide if it's really worth adding to your collection.

AVOID: Fully Loaded Series 2 The Rock

I hope you're either planning on a lot of comical Rock promos for your BCA figure fed or you're interested in customizing colorful floral patterns for Rock's $500 shirt, because there isn't much else to do with this lackluster street gear Rock figure.

I won't even refer to this as a BCA figure because it isn't capable of the "bone crunching" function. Personally, I don't think it's even worth using as a door stop, let alone an integral part of your collection.

There are far better repaints of this same figure in Backlash Series 1 and Signature Series 4, so it's not like you're missing out on a one-of-a-kind sculpt. That's too bad, really, because I could've gone for none more of this sculpt.

Take it from me, I know my BCAs and so will you.

Until next time, thanks for looking and have a nice day!

- Alexadougl5http://www.blogger.com/profile/07192386546273810391noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1162000754344604044.post-49326108207379996002012-01-05T22:52:00.013-05:002012-01-12T10:07:11.680-05:00Mega Review - Ranking the Superstars Series 1-9Jakks Pacific's Superstars Series may have lasted just nine assortments, but it will be forever synonymous with Bone Crunching Action figures, for better or worse.

A total of 56 action figures were released under the Superstars Series banner (singles cards only, so disregard the exclusive double packs for now) and, believe it or not, I will attempt to rank them by individual and overall series scores.

The scores may come as a surprise to some collectors and BCA die-hards (not unlike myself), but I have always believed that differing opinions provide for greater discussion.

So, let's get to it.

I'll begin with the individual figure scores listed in chronological order from Series 1 through 9.

If you are at all familiar with my ranking system, I award points based on a scale from 1 to 5 in five separate categories: Head, Torso (above the waist), Arms, Legs (below the waist), and Other (awarded for accessories included and the occasional bonus for exceptional detail).

Basically, the highest score I could ever award is 25, but I can assure you that it is no easy feat. The figure itself would have to be a near-perfect representation of the actual performers, and knowing Jakks' sculpting efforts in the pre-Real Scan days could make a 25 out of 25 a near-impossibility.

To date, only two figures have ever claimed a 22/25 from me and are currently tied for first place (Grudge Match Series Luna and...you'll see soon enough).

What does the Superstars Series have in store for us?

Starting from the beginning...

Superstars Series 1

1. Diesel - 19.5 (4, 4.5, 4, 4, 3)
2. Razor Ramon - 19 (4, 3.5, 4.5, 4, 3)
3. Undertaker - 18 (3.5, 3, 3.5, 4.5, 3.5)
4. Bret Hart - 17 (3, 4, 3.5, 3.5, 3)
5. Goldust - 17 (3.5, 3.5, 3, 3.5, 3.5)
6. Shawn Michaels - 14 (3, 3, 2.5, 2.5, 3)

Round 1 goes to Diesel in a close finish between he and his fellow Outsider from back in the day. Both Diesel and Razor's head sculpts were great for their time, and the attention to detail should never go unnoticed with Razor's accurate elbow pad combination and Diesel's molded tassles.

'Taker's first entry is solid, too, with some of the best boot sculpting this side of the Mississippi (okay, that makes no sense, but I've always wanted to say it). As you can see, there is a tie for fourth place, but I'd give the edge to Bret without the point support of accessories (i.e. Goldust's wig).

Shawn ranks last in the line-up because his debut figure is slightly above average at best. Too many inaccuracies and odd part choices prevent it from competing with the big boys of Series 1.

Average Series 1 figure score: 17.42 out of 25

What to make of Superstars Series 1?

It's an encouraging start for Jakks Pacific's wrestling figure line, and we can see the potential realized in two names (Diesel, Razor Ramon) who had already left the WWF by that point. So, I don't know if that was a good or bad sign of things to come, but the controversy provided for two great figures in the midst of all the chaos.

On to Series 2...

Superstars Series 2

1. Ultimate Warrior - 18.5 (3, 4, 4.5, 4, 3)
2. Owen Hart - 18 (3, 4, 3.5, 4.5, 3)
3. Bret Hart (repaint) - 17 (3, 4, 3.5, 3.5, 3)
4. Undertaker (repaint) - 17 (3, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5, 3.5)
5. Vader - 14.5 (2.5, 3, 3, 3, 3)
6. Shawn Michaels (repaint) - 14 (3, 3, 2.5, 2.5, 3)

Round 2 goes to Ultimate Warrior in another close finish early in the BCA line. Between the detail of Warrior's arm tassles and Owen's singlet/boots, Jakks' credibility is upheld in their second effort.

Once again, we've got a tie involving Bret Hart ('Taker's torso, too, if that counts), but I would still give the advantage to Bret without having to rely on accessories (i.e. 'Taker's hat) or cheap gags ('Taker "glows in the dark"). Vader, meanwhile, dukes it out with Shawn for the title of worst Superstars Series 2 figure (and loses).

With that said, do you think Jakks would re-release the exact same Shawn and Vader figures in a 2-pack and pretend it was an exclusive by slapping a sticker on the card?

...Wait, do I need to answer this?!? OF COURSE THEY DID!

This was Jakks at their finest or, as Michael Cole would say, "Vintage Jakks." And we're only two series in...

Average Series 2 figure score: 16.5 out of 25

What to make of Superstars Series 2?

Unfortunately, the quality has dropped off from Series 1 and there aren't enough good efforts to outweigh the bad. That is inexcusable considering the talent at hand, but at least Series 2 gave us a Warrior comeback figure (one of my personal favorites) and a "King of Harts" Owen after so many years of waiting. Remember when a "King of Harts" Owen was a big deal for Hasbro collectors?

...Wait, it still is.

Now for Series 3...

Superstars Series 3

1. Diesel (Series 1 re-release) - 20 (4, 4.5, 4, 4, 3.5)
2. Mankind - 19 (3.5, 4.5, 4, 3.5, 3.5)
3. Goldust (Series 1 repaint) - 18.5 (3.5, 4, 3.5, 3.5, 4)
4. Bret Hart (Series 1 re-release) - 17.5 (3, 4, 3.5, 3.5, 3.5)
5. Ahmed Johnson - 16.5 (3, 3.5, 3.5, 3, 3.5)
6. British Bulldog - 16 (3, 3, 3, 3.5, 3.5)
7. Sycho Sid - 15 (2.5, 3.5, 3, 2.5, 3.5)
8. Shawn Michaels (Series 1 re-release) - 14.5 (3, 3, 2.5, 2.5, 3.5)

Round 3 goes back to the Series 1 favorite, Diesel, even as we are left wondering why he was re-released on a Series 3 card. The reasoning has never been made clear, but Jakks issued half-new releases and half-old releases for the Series 3 line-up. This much I do know. Of the new releases, Mankind is head, shoulders, and an ear-and-a-half above the rest.

For the first time in the Superstars Series rankings, every figure is assisted by an extra half-point in the final category (Other) due to the inclusion of figure stands as a universal accessory. The tri-fecta of new talent (Ahmed, Bulldog, and Sid) alongside Mankind improve upon the likes of Vader's sculpt, but potentially great scores are hampered by questionable part choices (Sid's head sculpt and lower half) and a lack of detail (Bulldog's boot tassles).

Not surprisingly, an HBK re-release finishes last for the third (and final) time in the Superstars series rankings.

Average Series 3 figure score: 17.13 out of 25

What to make of Superstars Series 3?

It would appear Jakks is back on the right track with Series 3. However, would the overall score be as high without Diesel and Goldust in the mix? No, it wouldn't. In fact, it would be LOWER than Series 2 (at 16.42). So, what does that mean? It means Jakks was gracious enough to re-release Series 1 Diesel and a better Goldust, but their effort was steadily dropping off by only the third series. Would Series 4 bring more of the same? Look below.

Series 4 coming up...

Superstars Series 4, a.k.a "Bad Boys"

1. Jerry "The King" Lawler - 20.5 (3.5, 4.5, 4, 4.5, 4)
2. Faarooq - 16.5 (3, 4, 3, 3, 3.5)
3. Justin "Hawk" Bradshaw - 16.5 (3.5, 3, 2.5, 3, 4.5)
4. Vader (Series 2 re-release) - 15 (2.5, 3, 3, 3, 3.5)
5. Stone Cold Steve Austin - 14 (2.5, 3.5, 2, 2.5, 3.5)
6. Hunter Hearst Helmsley - 12 (2, 2.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5)

Round 4 easily goes to "The King" with one of the single-most underrated BCA sculpts (and I don't mean head) ever done by Jakks Pacific. It's one of the Superstars Series' best contributions to the BCA line, in my opinion. Besides Lawler, we're left with four debut figures and one Vader re-release from Series 2.

Now, I'm sure Jakks intended on this being a heel-themed set (one of the first times this has ever been done in a wrestling figure line, come to think of it) with the name "Bad Boys", but I have to question whether an alternate spelling for Series 4 might have been "Bad Toys", because that's what most are.

Again, Lawler aside, the best of the bunch are decent AT BEST. Bradshaw forces a tie based primarily on the wonders of his accessories, so Faarooq gets preference in my book. Vader is...Vader, but the two biggest surprises come in Austin and Helmsley. Not the good kind of surprises, by the way.

Part choices kill Austin's chances at a good score, and I would say the same for Helmsley if it wasn't altogether a steaming pile of crap. Literally, it is one of the worst figures in the entire BCA line, let alone the Superstars series.

Average Series 4 figure score: 15.75 out of 25

What to make of Superstars Series 4?

I would rather be blinded by the reflective light of the WWF block logo figure stands than have to endure another series like "Bad Boys." It makes me question why I have an unabated love for the BCA line. Thankfully, "The King" saves the day. Everyone will tell you how ridiculous it was trying to find a Steve Austin figure, especially his debut, after he blew up, but it doesn't quite hold up like Lawler's "Bad Boys" figure after all these years. The Faarooq's and Bradshaw's of the set could be a heck of a lot better, but nothing is as bad as HHH's debut figure.

Please Series 5, don't let us down...

Superstars Series 5

1. Flash Funk - 19 (2.5, 4, 3.5, 4.5, 4.5)
2. Savio Vega - 18.5 (3, 4, 4, 4, 3.5)
3. Rocky Maivia - 17.5 (2.5, 3.5, 4, 4, 3.5)
4. Ken Shamrock - 16 (3.5, 3.5, 1.5, 4, 3.5)
5. Sycho Sid (Series 3 repaint) - 15 (2.5, 3.5, 3, 2.5, 3.5)
6. Stone Cold Steve Austin - 14 (2.5, 3.5, 2, 2.5, 3.5)

Round 5 goes to Flash Funk by a narrow margin, though ultimately his head sculpt is what prevents him from a 20+ score.

Savio, Rocky, and Kenny Shamrock round out the rest of the debut figures in Series 5, and they're not that bad. To me, Series 5 has always been a middle of the pack assortment that doesn't get much recognition, nor flack from collectors, and that suits it just fine.

It's an upgrade from Series 4, for sure, but it will never be among the greatest BCA series. Two reasons for that are the Sid repaint and Austin re-release; they add very little to the set other than star presence. But, as we've seen, star presence does not often translate to a quality BCA figure.

Average Series 5 figure score: 16.67 out of 25

What to make of Superstars Series 5?

It is the very definition of an "okay" series, as in you aren't likely to rank it in the top, nor bottom, three. It has its moments (Funk/Savio's body sculpts, Rocky's pad detail, Shamrock's head/leg sculpt, and this print ad) that force you to remember it exists, but that in and of itself is the problem; Series 5 is extremely forgettable. I would consider it a step in the right direction for Jakks figures, but I also don't know what else to say to describe Series 5. I have no more words.

Series 6, on the other hand, almost left the BCA line without a voice for good.

Superstars Series 6

1. "Marvelous" Marc Mero - 20 (3, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5, 3.5)
2. "The Lethal Weapon" Steve Blackman - 20 (3.5, 4.5, 3.5, 4.5, 4)
3. "Double J" Jeff Jarrett - 18.5 (2, 4, 4.5, 4, 4.5)
4. HHH - 18 (3, 3.5, 3.5, 4.5, 3.5)
5. Mark Henry - 17.5 (2.5, 3.5, 4, 4, 3.5)
6. "Black Hart" Owen Hart - 13 (1, 3.5, 2, 3, 3.5)

And by voice I mean "bone crunching" sound.

Jakks planned to do away with the BCA figures in favor of the Slammers line in early 1998, but soon after changed their minds and scrapped the planned Slammers Series 3. Apparently, Slammers Series 1 and 2 sold less than expected (who knew?), so the decision was made to bring back BCA (the first of many rebirths) with the original Slammers Series 3 line-up (a.k.a. Superstars Series 6).

It gave us a whole new perspective on BCA with much larger molds in Mero, Blackman, Henry, and HHH. Jarrett was like a blast from the past for all the Hasbro collectors who desperately wanted a "Double J", except with a face sculpt and wardrobe resembling 1970's Elton John.

And then there was One, err, Owen who, in Series 6, had one of the more indiscernible head likenesses in the entire BCA line. Is it supposed to even look like Owen? Jarrett maybe?? Were two sculpts merged together in some sort of freakish lab experiment and this was the result?!?

I really have no clue, but I do know that the "Black Hart" figure resides in the dungeon of the Series 6 rankings.

Average Series 6 figure score: 17.83 out of 25

What to make of Superstars Series 6?

Not only did it single-handedly revive the BCA line and put Slammers figures to shame (SHAME I tell you), but it produced the best overall series of BCA figures in all six assortments ranked thus far. I know, I know. Series 1 is not to be touched as it is the Holy Grail of BCA figure series, but I am finally putting that myth to rest. Mero's sculpt is my personal favorite, but I have grown an appreciation for Blackman's debut figure (as with Savio from Series 5) regardless of the whole articulation, uh, thing. Also, it cannot be understated HOW MUCH BETTER Series 6 HHH is than Series 4 HHH. Think Listerine fresh breath compared to raw onion stank breath.

You've gotta wash that bad taste out of your mouth, and that's what Jakks did with Series 6. Would Series 7 keep the long-lasting flavor going?

Take a bite...

Superstars Series 7

1. Undertaker - 20 (4, 4, 4.5, 4, 3.5)
2. X-Pac - 19.5 (3.5, 4.5, 4, 4, 3.5)
3. Stone Cold Steve Austin - 16 (3.5, 3.5, 3, 2.5, 3.5)
4. Dr Death - 15 (3.5, 2.5, 3, 2.5, 3.5)
5. Val Venis - 14.5 (2, 3.5, 2, 2.5, 4.5)
6. Edge - 13.5 (3.5, 2.5, 2, 2, 3.5)

The flavor's still there, it's just not as strong or engaging as before. You know, I taste a little raw onion on the back end.

With all due respect, 'Taker and X-Pac carry Series 7 out of obscurity, but can't quite bring it to superstardom. New sculpts for Austin and debuts for the latter half of the list fall short of expectations, but the top of the mountain is still very much revered by BCA collectors. X-Pac makes the most of the smaller, cruiserweight mold and 'Taker continues to amaze with phenomenal tattoo work (for its time) and wardrobe design.

Dr Death went on to become one of the worst selling wrestling figures (and WWF busts) of all time by most accounts. Edge and Val leave me scratching my head wondering why the size of their sculpts (big for Edge, small for Val) were not reversed. Austin is...another street gear Austin, but a very underappreciated head sculpt looking back compared to his more popular looks.

Average Series 7 figure score: 16.42 out of 25

What to make of Superstars Series 7?

Series 7 brings back so many good memories for me being a kid during the Attitude era, but I have to take the rose-colored glasses off for this review. Outside of 'Taker and X-Pac, it pales in comparison to Series 6. The third best figure in Series 7 would be lucky to crack the sixth and final spot in Series 6 if the names were changed, and I think that says it all. Series 6 was the best yet, whereas Series 7 was another flash in the pan, or failed attempt at reinvigorating the BCA line. Does that bode well for Series 8?

It only gets better from here, right?...

Superstars Series 8, a.k.a. "Team Corporate"

1. Big Boss Man - 21 (3.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4)
2. Shane McMahon - 19.5 (4, 4, 4, 4, 3.5)
3. Commissioner Michaels - 19 (3, 4, 4, 3.5, 4.5)
4. The Rock - 18.5 (3.5, 4, 3, 4.5, 3.5)
5. Kane - 16 (3, 2.5, 3.5, 3.5, 3.5)
6. Ken Shamrock - 15.5 (3.5, 3, 3, 3, 3.5)

...Right.

What is it about these heel-themed Superstars series sets that bring the best ("Team Corporate") and the worst ("Bad Boys") out of Jakks?

For the most part, Jakks got it right with Series 8. "Team Corporate" might only consist of half-in-ring and half-street gear figures, but it gave us one excellent full body sculpt (Boss Man), two great suited figures (Shane, Shawn), one great street gear figure (The Rock), and two decent figures in wrestling attire (the first non-Slammers Kane, and a new Shamrock).

Compared to Series 7's rankings, the worst figure in Series 8 could still contend for a top-four spot in the previous assortment. It might not "say it all", but it still says something about how good Series 8 is.

Boss Man will go down as one of the best BCA sculpts ever made, and clearly the best thus far in the Superstars series rankings. Jakks spared no expense, and more than anything it's sad to see their potential realized only a small fraction of the time. Boss Man succeeded where so many others failed, so I guess we should at least be thankful for that.

Series 8 should be considered the most well-balanced Superstars Series of them all, or essentially the WrestleMania X-7 of the nine assortments. I believe there's something for everyone to like here.

Average Series 8 figure score: 18.25 out of 25

What to make of Superstars Series 8?

It's the best of the best, plain and simple. Boss Man excels in nearly every category (believe it or not, I've probably underrated the head sculpt), and it's met with some great competition in Shane, Shawn, and The Most Electrifying Man in...Sweat Pants. I remember when a non-Slammers Kane figure felt like it was never going to happen, but it finally did in Series 8. Great move by Jakks on holding out for that one. As for Shamrock, well, it's not better than his debut Series 5 figure, but I still enjoy it for what it's worth (I once tried to make a Paul London custom out of my Series 8 Shamrock. I took to the "SHAMROCK" text on the front of his trunks with a permanent marker and, VOILA!, I was finished. ...*smh*).

Series 9 surely couldn't live up to the standards of Series 8, could it?

One more time...

Superstars Series 9

1. Paul Wight - 22 (4.5, 4.5, 4, 5, 4)
2. Ministry Undertaker - 21 (4, 4, 4.5, 4, 4.5)
3. Gangrel - 19 (4, 4.5, 4.5, 2.5, 3.5)
4. Christian - 17 (2.5, 4, 4, 3, 3.5)
5. Bob Holly - 16.5 (2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 3.5)
6. Vince McMahon - 13.5 (3, 2.5, 2.5, 2, 3.5)

As it concerns individual rankings, Series 9 does live up to the Boss Man hype, and bests it. However, in the overall rankings, Series 9 couldn't be #1 with McMahon's figure dragging the average down significantly.

Vince's lone Superstars Series figure is so bad that I didn't even credit the half-suit with any points in the "Other" category. It's not a functional suit, nor does it even look presentable unless you're standing 50 feet away from it (and it must be displayed facing the front at all times). Not to mention, it covers up a rather poor likeness of Vince anyway (Really? A repainted Billy Gunn lower half?!? I'm done).

On the other end of the spectrum, Paul Wight is the best thing to happen to the Superstars series since, well, Boss Man. He's also tied (with the Grudge Match Series Luna) for the highest score I've ever given in any of my reviews. He towers over the competition as he should and, though his features are exaggerated in parts, his head sculpt is one of Jakks' best from the pre-Real Scan era.

Undertaker is no slouch either with the addition of the greatest piece of removable clothing, his red-and-black Ministry of Darkness robe, in the Superstars series. Underneath exists the same great Series 7 sculpt, but in this case it's the accessory that makes all of the difference.

Gangrel and Christian share the same upper body sculpts, but The Brood's leader, Gangrel, embodies its design and the snarling head sculpt he was given. I have to discredit Christian a few points for copying Gangrel's style, but a mediocre head sculpt also won't help his score. Holly's debut leaves a lot to be desired, but it's still a respectable figure from his pre-"Hardcore" days.

Average Series 9 figure score: 18.17 out of 25

What to make of Superstars Series 9?

It came oh so close to equaling the effort of Series 8, but ultimately Vince brought it down in the end. How prophetic, eh? But, seriously, it's still a great set with even greater significance to the BCA line. Unfortunately, this would be the final Superstars Series, and we will never be know what Series 10 could have been (outside of my Rock Band 3 band name, of course :-P). It was just starting to get good! Oh well, at least we were treated to two great sets to close out the BCA line in the year 1999.

So, where does that leave us for the overall rankings?

Here's a rundown of the nine Superstars Series in order from best to worst, based on an overall average figure score:

The Superstars Series

1. Series 8, a.k.a. "Team Corporate" - 18.25
2. Series 9 - 18.17
3. Series 6 - 17.83
4. Series 1 - 17.42
5. Series 3 - 17.13
6. Series 5 - 16.67
7. Series 2 - 16.50
8. Series 7 - 16.42
9. Series 4, a.k.a. "Bad Boys" - 15.75

There would be a lot of ties from here on out if I attempted to craft a series of "Best" and "Worst" Superstars Series figure lists using the scores posted above, so I'll institute a few tiebreakers to make the lists more visually appealing for all of you. You can thank me later. Or not, it's okay.

Here's a ranking of the top 11 individual figure scores for the Superstars Series:

The Top 11 Superstars Series Figures

1. Paul Wight - 22/25, Series 9
2. Big Boss Man - 21/25, Series 8
3. Ministry Undertaker - 21/25, Series 9
4. Jerry "The King" Lawler - 20.5/25, Series 4
5. Diesel - 19.5/25, Series 1
10. X-Pac - 19.5/25, Series 7
11. Shane McMahon - 19.5/25, Series 8

And to top (or, rather, bottom) it all off, here's a ranking of the bottom 11 individual figure scores for the Superstars Series:

The Bottom 11 Superstars Series Figures

11. It's Austin and the Backlash bunch!Well, gee, it's been a while, hasn't it?

Almost like attending an awkward five-year high school reunion with people you really wouldn't care to forget about for another five years.

No? It's not like that, you say?

Oh, that's right.

It's like someone who allows a full month to pass with not even one miniscule update to said person's BCA figure blog.

Ouch.

Rest assured, I have kept busy.

I graduated from college after successfully completing (re: barely scraping by) a final research course, and my official degree will be delivered by the end of September.

In the mean time, I've received other notable items in the mail, though I'm sure N64 game cartridges and Jakks Pacific WWF wrestling figures will not look good on a resume.

Or so I've been told. By common sense.

But it will benefit those of you who haven't forgotten about this little ol' site, as here is the eighteenth installment of VJB's "Latest Vintage Jakks Receivings" series of posts.

I purchased several MOC Jakks BCA and TTL figures from an eBay seller (oftimespast, who I would greatly recommend) about a month ago and included was the last Signature Series figure I needed to complete the set, Series 6 Stone Cold Steve Austin, and five Backlash Series 4 figures I've been after for years.

Even though I ended up paying more than I usually would because of combined shipping charges, each figure cost about $6-7 shipped, I was more than satisfied with my purchases.

Signature Series 6 Austin uses one of my favorite figure molds, originally from the Austin/Rock 2 Tuff Series 5 2-pack, and the detail on the Backlash Series 4 figures is surprisingly good for being the second-to-last BCA figure series of throwaway repaints.

What more could you ask for then? Besides accessories, of course.

A few changes I would make to these figures that I think would be vast improvements:

1. Darker shades of blonde hair for Edge and Triple H; a dirty blonde shade would work fine for both (see: their respective Backlash Series 3 figures).

2. Detailed tats or simply scribbling lines on the underside of 'Taker's arms to give it that wrap-around effect; still, it's a very good effort for what it is (same goes for his final Backlash Series 5 figure).

3. You won't see it here, but there is a dreaded "thumbs up" arm variant for the Backlash Series 4 Austin. Oh, right, my suggestion? Burn the "thumbs up" arms. Every last one of them. In fact, Mr. Garrison sums up my thoughts nicely on that particular BCA arm mold.

So, with that being said, I'll leave you with a few detailed shots of the figures.

My take: Repaints are always a mixed bag, so try not to overspend (whoops) and, if you're not in the business of collecting every BCA figure (and if there is such a business, I wonder what it pays...), pick and choose the figures that fit best with your collection.

If you're a fan of late 1999/early 2000 attire repaints, then the Backlash Series is for you.

The Signature Series has its own collection of gems (a future post, perhaps?), and it shouldn't be looked over on account of measly facsimile signatures.

Fun fact: With the purchase of the Signature Series 6 Stone Cold Steve Austin figure, I now have one of every Signature Series figure.

However, I still need the Signature Series 3 torso variants for Austin, Edge, and Triple H.

Until next time, thanks for looking and have a nice day!
No matter how many times I repeat that to myself, it still hasn't quite sunk in that a one-of-a-kind BCA figure is in my possession.

I waited patiently (albeit nervously) this past Monday night close to 10 p.m. EST, slowly counting down the minutes and seconds for one very special eBay listing.

It was for a S.T.O.M.P. Series 3 Sable prototype that I knew from the moment I spotted it last weekend it had to be mine.

Not because I was a fan of Sable, since I'd like to think my pre-pubescent days are behind me, nor was it because I get my thrills from unpainted crazy demonic-looking female wrestling figures, but because the BCA line means that much to me.

To own a prototype of ANY BCA figure is some sort of an accomplishment for me, and I certainly hope this won't be the last experience.

For the seventeenth installment of VJB's "Latest Vintage Jakks Receivings" series of posts, I present to you the Sable prototype I grossly overpaid for to the tune of $55.81 shipped.
Eh, you only live once, so three cheers for stupidity and financial irresponsibility!

Thank you, thank you.

However, I wasn't the only fool bidding on this item; the final bid ended approximately at my maximum bid of $51.91, so either someone else was attracted to its alluring dullness or the seller scammed me by covertly increasing the bid with another account.

Oh, well.

Before getting into the specifics, here is the item's description from the listing:

"You are bidding on a WWF S3 Stomp Sable PROTOTYPE. This is a "never been released" figure. First shot. It was unreleased due to the outfit being too revealing and the breasts being too large. I've included some WWF package labels. The figure is in excellent condition."

Upon closer inspection, there were several changes made before production.

The Sable prototype uses the same back hair piece as the actual figure, though the front hair piece (the bangs set across the face) is conspicuously missing. I'll have to get in touch with the seller again, but I don't believe this piece had been considered yet for the figure.

Unlike the actual figure's top, the Sable prototype is very revealing. As was mentioned in the description, the breasts are larger due to the bikini top sculpt (the straps meet in a crossing "x" pattern across the top of her back) and, believe it or not, her nipples are visible in the sculpt.

The Sable prototype is wearing a much smaller bikini bottom compared to the width and thickness of the actual figure's lower torso. The prototype's ribs are more visible and the belly button is placed lower on the torso, as well.

The right arm of the Sable prototype is a completely different sculpt with an open, claw-like hand, which leads me to believe that the incorporation of grasping a whip accessory had also not yet been considered for the figure.

The left arm is the same, though I found it interesting that the thumbnail of the prototype appears longer in its unpainted form.

The final difference I spotted was in the heels where the hard plastic prototype sculpt feels more stabile than the actual figure. Also, there is no hole underneath the prototype's left shoe where a WWF stand's peg would fit for display.

Personally, and I'm not just saying this because I own it, I prefer the overall sculpt of the prototype to the actual S.T.O.M.P. Series 3 figure.

Of course, it probably was too revealing for children to have in their collections, but it's a shame that Jakks never salvaged the sculpt for an online or mailaway exclusive.

My take: Hopefully, I'll have more to tell about this figure and its origins when I contact the seller again for more information. It's undoubtedly a unique prototype that had the potential for becoming a great figure.

Would I advise others to bid the same as I did? No way.

Was it worth $55 and change? What do you think?

Clearly, it's an unpainted figure with limited appeal and should not be considered as some kind of holy grail for BCA or Divas figure collectors.

It's good for what it is, but apparently it wasn't good enough to be made.

Fun fact: As far as I know, and that goes about as far as my mailbox reaches, I'm the only owner of this particular S.T.O.M.P. Series 3 Sable prototype.

Oh, yeah, and I blew $55 on it! That's a fun fact for...well, not me.

In the end, this is for all of the collectors who came to see me and for all the..erm..collectors who want to be me!

*Does "the grind"*

*Throws out back*

Until next time, thanks for looking and have a nice day!
he’s been the VJB Suggestion of the Week for about two weeks or more, so that should tell you one of two things: it’s that good, or I’m too lazy to update it.

It’s the truth (both things actually), and even with the facsimile signature tainting the Dude’s right leg (a matter of opinion), it’s an excellent figure.

There’s no denying the head sculpt is one of the best produced by Jakks in the BCA era, and every other major body part is spot-on in recreating the likeness of the hippest cat alive.

It’s a definite winner in the rankings for Signature Series 2.

<img deduct any points for the Slammers torso because this was simply a re-release of the Slammers Series 2 debut Kane and his torso-improved Superstars Series 8 figure had yet to be released.

You get about what you’d expect from the Slammers version of Kane, except with an obscenely large facsimile signature on his right thigh.

Not a bad figure by any means, but it is />Similar to Kane, Undertaker’s sculpt (which debuted in the Championship Title Series #1 boxed set) needs a little more beef. It also needs a little more ink for that matter.

However, I have no qualms with acknowledging the excellent shade of purple conceived by Jakks in the, uh, figure laboratory, even if it is an exaggerated look for the Deadman.

He seems to be an early favorite in this week’s poll (which was extended from closing today to next Monday, by the way), but in my book he’s only slightly better than average.

<img still ranks higher than HBK, which should warm the hearts of all of ‘Taker’s minions out there.

And, yet, I actually like this particular figure of Shawn in his signature (no pun intended) entrance chaps.

The hair color is improved from his Shotgun Series 2 figure, but the attire and />
The proverbial “turd in the punch bowl”, and in this case “punch bowl” is referring to Signature Series 2.

Turd is referring to, well, a turd of a potentially-good Road Dogg figure.

It’s like Jakks took the half-decent 2 Tuff Series 2 debut Dee-Oh-Double-Gee and decided to cut costs mainly from this figure and not so much for the other Signature Series 2 cast.

As I mentioned before, his pant logos are scaled wrong and the detail on his boots is missing signature additions to each figure's right leg, we have re-releases of Slammers Series 2 Dude Love and Kane in this assortment.

B.A. Billy Gunn, Shawn Michaels, and The Undertaker are the only legitimate repaints to the line, but there's nothing here that will "wow" you quite like Austin and Goldust from Series 1.

Gunn and HBK are lacking detail on the back of their trunks/tights; however, I recall Billy Gunn wearing plain trunks early on with the New Age Outlaws, so it's passable, and Shawn's zebra stripe chaps are commendable, in my opinion.

There's nothing inherently wrong with 'Taker either (disregarding scale and a lack of tattoos), and I've always really liked the dark purple concoction that is his Signature Series 2 attire. The worst? I would think Road Dogg.

Half re-releases and half repaints, the make-up of Signature Series 2 is largely filler for the BCA line.

Do with it what you will.

Fun fact: It's no variant, but Road Dogg has his own recurring error figure as all of the 2 Tuff Series 2 re-releases feature "PD" on the side of his pants where it should read "RD." the trailblazing, eyebrow-rais...nevermind, Off the Mat boxed set, Jakks gave us more belts in the fall of 1999 than we had seen in the previous two years combined.

First, an introduction Wait, what?!), and Signature Series 6 Vince McMahon (likely his last BCA figure produced).

It comes out to about $4.37 per MOC figure which isn't too bad of a deal, especially since I wanted three of the four for my loose collection (I already have Vince).

With that said, let's take a look at the other three who have escaped their plastic confines.

Ringside Collection Series 1 Sable -

I don't know about any of you, but for the longest time I thought this figure was a variant.

I always compared it with the Managers Series 1 figure in a black dress, and I never owned this version even as a kid.

Now that I do, well, it's not much different from her figure in the 2-pack with "Wildman" Marc Mero, who (and I'm not sure it wasn't) coincidentally had a red attire repaint of his own. Make that two if you count the Live Wire Series 2 "Marvelous" Marc Mero figure in red boxing trunks.

On this particular Sable, the makeup is applied heavily and I'm not crazy about the two-shade eyebrows, but the red gown with gold sparkles and red fingernail polish are a nice touch.

Personally, I prefer the Managers Series 1 figure but, again, it's not that much different.

Fully Loaded Series 2 Stone Cold Steve Austin -

I think I broke his leaf blower accessory within minutes of opening the package, but maybe I'm wrong since there isn't anything to technically break on it.

It's an awesome sculpt for yet another unusual weapon added to the mix, but Austin is rather plain in comparison.

For as often as we were "treated" to street gear figures in the BCA line, this one just doesn't offer much that can't be found elsewhere. This was released shortly before the 2 Tuff Series 3 Austin opposite Undertaker, and truthfully the appeal with Fully Loaded Series 2 lies in a gardening tool that I don't recall Austin ever using on TV.

I've deduced that Austin's lower body was repainted from Slammers Series 2 Shawn Michaels, the same mold which can be found in my previous post about Shotgun Series 2.

Why not just use a traditional jean mold, you might be asking yourself?

Why is the sky blue? Series 1 backstory?

Follow me...

"WASHINGTON D.C. - Rumors surfaced over the Internet suggesting that an elite corps of the World Wrestling Federation may be responsible for devastating anti-terrorist attacks around the world. The United States government neither denied nor confirmed that such a group exists, but sources deep inside the Pentagon provided some sketchy details. According to these sources, the government secretly hand-picked wrestlers to form an underground militia to bring war criminals to justice.

The World Wrestling Federation would not comment on the story, but during the period in question, as well as in recent months, some of their top wrestlers were unexplainably absent from the ring. Stone Cold Steve Austin, Ahmed Johnson, Crush, Brian Pillman, Undertaker, and Ken Shamrock are among those suspected of being part of this Special Tactical Operations Military Police, or STOMP as they are known, but others may be involved as well. A full scale media investigation is expected to shed light on these bizarre allegations, but until then the story remains clouded in speculation and unsubstantiated rumor.

Please see STOMP, A11"

Did I say delight? I meant literary diarrhea.

Until next time, thanks for looking and have a nice day!

- Alexadougl5http://www.blogger.com/profile/07192386546273810391noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1162000754344604044.post-68898522439995446802011-06-04T20:00:00.007-04:002011-07-03T12:49:54.890-04:00Mini Review #4 - Shotgun Saturday Night Series 2Please excuse the break in continuity (this post should be focused on 2 Tuff Series 3), but for some reason the series I will cover has always interested me.

Beats me if it's the design of the carding or the figures themselves, but Shotgun Saturday Night Series 2 is special in its own way.

There's an exclusive attire for B.A. Billy Gunn, Sable, and Shawn Michaels that cannot be found elsewhere, but it also holds a connection to my past, come to think of it.

I remember my mother taking me and a friend to Toys"R"Us one evening and we had the pick of the litter, or at least what was left on the shelves sometime in early 1999.

I walked away with Billy Gunn and my friend bought Road Dog (or as the packaging reads, oddly enough, "Jesse James Road Dog").

His came with a DX ladder accessory which I envied, but my Billy Gunn had a cool shade of blue for his trunks (along with a trash can and lid) and put together we had an easily recognizable tag team based on their matching DX t-shirts.

My friend was spending the night at my house and we ended up playing with our figures that night while, as was customary, watching wrestling on TV.

These memories stand out to me because they were fun, carefree times, and maybe because we had also bought a box of Buncha Crunch that night too, so I guess I have Shotgun Series 2 to thank for it.

Now, how will the figures shape up to my ratings system? The head sculpt is decent at best and everything else is pure garbage. There is very little detail on his trunks, and the accessories are the saving grace from this receiving a horrible score. Terrible, garbage, and horrible? I didn't know we were talking about Jeff Jarrett! But, seriously, avoid this at all costs (Head - 2, Torso - 1.5, Arms - 1.5, Legs - 1.5, Other - 3.5).

So where does that leave us with Shotgun Series 2?

Pretty much where I left off, though Jarrett's Shotgun figure was released first and I gave this one a half point extra because of the guitar accessory that was included.

It's true to the character, but the "Don't Make Me Mad" writing on the body of the guitar is so bad that it's funny (and then back to being bad again).

I'm beginning to think these two figures will be the lowest scores I ever give out; I want to say "Let's hope so," but I kind of hope there are some other atrocities out there waiting to be reviewed.

Live Wire Series 1 Stone Cold beckons, I suppose.

B.A Billy Gunn, Road Dog Jesse James - Divas figure collectors can be an interesting bunch, to say the least.

They're devoted to the six-inch plastic representations of their real-life plastic favorite women wrestlers.

Nothing wrong with that, and I certainly won't be the first to judge what with having my own unhealthy obsessions like BCA figures, and sweet potatoes.

Okay, maybe that last one isn't so bad.

Feeding your obsessions can be difficult to keep pace with if, for example, you are awaiting future Mattel WWE Divas or Jakks TNA Knockout figures.

In the meantime, and if you haven't yet done so through the years, maybe you should consider adding Jakks WWF Divas figures from the BCA line.

What they lack in articulation and, for some, likeness, they more than make up for with attention to much smaller details and an unparalleled connection to the Attitude era.

Beginning in the year 1997, Jakks Pacific introduced female wrestling figures to collectors who hadn't known many since the days of Miss Elizabeth in the LJN line.

Sable's debut Jakks figure in a glittery black dress accompanies then-husband "Wildman" Marc Mero as part of a Managers Series 2-pack released in July 1997.

In true Jakks fashion, Sable's sculpt is repainted to red not long after for an October 1997 release of Ringside Collection Series 1 alongside Sunny's debut figure in a white top and black skirt.

Sunny with an all-pink outfit and white boots would become the first to receive the exclusive treatment in the first Raw is War boxed set released by the end of the year.

April of 1998 saw the Managers Series replaced by 2 Tuff Series 1 and two more debut Divas figures, Chyna (with HHH) and Marlena (with Goldust).

Chyna would go on to receive the second most BCA figures (with seven) of any WWF Diva not named Sable (who had eight); for the record, Sunny finishes in third (with three, including a Special Edition Series 1 re-release), and the rest (Debra, Jacqueline, Luna, and Marlena) are tied with one figure a piece.

Amidst a sea or vast space of repaints and re-releases in 1998, namely Chyna's gold attire repaint for Live Wire Series 1, there was one additional debut figure issued in a December 1998 Grudge Match 2-pack opposite Sable - that being Luna.

Jacqueline's debut (Signature Series 3, February 1999) and Debra's debut (2 Tuff Series 5 with "Double J" Jeff Jarrett, September 1999) figures highlight the rest of the BCA line's contributions to Divas figures, though Sable's endless repaints continue on with Shotgun Saturday Night Series 2 (January 1999) and the Sunday Night Heat Series (March 1999).

Last but not least, Jakks partnered up with White's Guide magazine in 1999 for a limited edition (1 of 5,000) Sable figure in metallic silver gear repainted from her S.T.O.M.P. Series 3 figure, as previously seen on the blog.

As of now, I own about 14 of those listed above, but there are several that I'm still after (specifically, Live Wire Series 1 Chyna and Ringside Collection Series 1 Sable).

Here's to hoping I find a few of my wants and you discover yours.

Until next time, thanks for looking and have a nice day!
Have you ever attempted an ECW custom using BCA figures?

If you've ever stumbled on the Collection tab of this blog, you would have seen my Mikey Whipwreck custom (of a 2 Tuff Series 4 Billy Gunn figure) made when I was a kid.

And that's why I feel compelled to acknowledge the great ones out there, because customizing ain't easy.

That, or I just suck.

Until next time, thanks for looking and have a nice day!

- Alexadougl5http://www.blogger.com/profile/07192386546273810391noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1162000754344604044.post-82421386518038201302011-05-10T00:32:00.018-04:002011-05-21T10:11:01.610-04:00Tomart's has got your fix of MOC BCA figure pics
Courtesy of one Tomart's Action Figure Digest #079 issue and WrestlingFigs.com forum member mad2009's recent "Blast from the Past" post, it was brought to my attention, and the rest of the WF community, that multiple pages showcasing MOC BCA figures just...never gets old.

MOC, MIB, MIP - It doesn't matter how you classify their mint statuses, just as long as you become familiar with the names and series of origin.

Take a look at these 11 magazine scans and see if there are any figures pictured that you may have owned, always wanted but never had, or never knew even existed.

Please note that this is not a complete collection of the BCA line. Several of the later series are missing from these pages, but it should be comprehensive enough for the casual collector.

Here are a few notes of what I found interesting from Tomart's pages.

Notes:

Anyone else notice the variant Superstars Series 1 and 2 cards? The text in the upper right corner is either a glossy finish or backed by a yellow stamp marking.

Bret Hart from the third photo exemplifies this difference in the line-up across the top of the right side of the page.

My belief is that these cards came in separate waves, though I'm not sure of the order. Considering most of the Series 1 and 2 cards appear to have the glossy text, I would think the yellow backdrop was released first.

Is there any sort of rarity in the differences of the cards? I don't know, but I'll see what I can find.

You'll also see the Superstars Series 3 card shape variants in Picture 3, from the die-cut design to the regular or full-sized cards (or however it is you refer to them).

In Picture 6, Fully Loaded Series 1 Kane and Al Snow have a pair of packaging variants; the accessories included in each are shifted for, well, unknown reasons. Kane comes with a mallet and shovel, and Al Snow is featured with Head and a trusty stool.

Also, for the Maximum Sweat fans out there, Kane is pictured both with and without his mask in another interesting packaging arrangement.

The Raw Is War Series Stone Cold Steve Austin from Picture 8 has light and dark paint applications to his facial hair, thus making another unusual variant for BCA figure collectors.

Speaking of unusual, it's not often that the Jakks Pacific BCA 3-packs are acknowledged, but in Picture 10 we see those for the WrestleMania XIV and Superstars Series 7 sets (more on these 3-packs in a later post).

Also from Picture 10, the Championship Title Series #1 and Survivor Series boxed set variants ("Europeam" incorrect spelling, and Goldust's wacky assemblance of parts from 'Taker to Vader's influence).

Finally, in Picture 11 we are introduced to some of the bagged exclusives for the BCA line, as well as Raw Is War Monster Ring variants with Referee and Vince McMahon figures included (for more on these ring variants, check out the BCA Checklist tab at the top of the page and scroll to the bottom).

<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; Eh, no one will notice.

Now, this is assuming that all things happen as per usual for the company’s wrestling figure line in ’96 – Superstars Series 1 and 2 goes off without a hitch and the Razor-Diesel, Bret-Owen, and Shawn-Vader exclusive 2-packs reach out to the collectors market.

Also, I primarily focused on the members of the WWF roster from a five-month period, January to May 1996, in order to keep with the release schedule of Superstars Series 1.

I’ve decided to break my ideas up into separate categories, or assortments, which play on the existing “Superstars” theme of the 1996 packaging.

Beginning with “Rising Stars”, a line featuring up-and-coming WWF Superstars with a select number of jobbers thrown into the mix to appease collectors, Jakks Pacific offers an alternative to the established names like Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels on store shelves.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">WWF Rising Stars Series:
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Series 1 (Fictional Release – Summer 1996)
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">”The Ringmaster” Steve Austin
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Ahmed Johnson
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Hunter Hearst Helmsley
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Barry Horowitz
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">”The Portuguese Man O’War” Aldo Montoya
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Savio Vega

Would it have been a colossal failure? You betcha.

I can just picture the shelfwarmers arm-in-arm on the pegs now, but the bigger question would be is there any differentiation in the figure’s sculpts?

As you know, many of the earlier BCA figures re-used sculpts to cut costs. Does that mean Austin, Johnson, Helmsley and Vega wouldn’t have looked the way they did in their respective debuts from Superstars Series 3 to 5?

For argument’s sake, we’ll just assume Jakks knows what they’re doing at the time and releases each with their own custom sculpts where applicable (heads and torsos especially).

You can already tell this will be a FANTASY post then, right? Good, let’s move on.

My next lineup will cover the “Classic Stars” then-currently employed by the company. There aren’t many that qualify as legends returning to the ring in 1996, but here are a few I’ve brought together.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">WWF Classic Stars Series:
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Series 1 (Fictional Release – Summer 1996)
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Jake “The Snake” Roberts
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Rowdy Roddy Piper
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Jerry “The King” Lawler
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The Ultimate Warrior
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Luke Williams (One-half of The Bushwhackers)
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Butch Miller (Other half of The Bushwhackers)

The latter three were still technically active at the time and they fit the bill as legends in the industry, however Roberts, Piper and Warrior all received significant exposure in their roles with the WWF in 1996.

Roberts and Warrior would probably be the most in-demand, but Piper, Lawler, and The Bushwhackers each had their own fan bases and could easily make the crossover to Jakks’ BCA style.

Next, as a pre-cursor to both the Tag Team and 2 Tuff series of double packs released from 1997 to 1999, I offer up a serving of “Superstars Tag Teams” using the same carding as the exclusive 2-packs.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">WWF Superstars Tag Teams Series:
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Series 1 (Fictional Release – Early Fall 1996)
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The Bodydonnas (Skip and Zip)
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The Smoking Gunns (Billy and Bart Gunn)
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The Godwinns (Henry O. and Phineas I. Hmm, I'll get back to you on that one.

Now, as it pertains to Jakks Pacific's BCA figure line, Edge was not a Superstar (forget about being "Rated R", the closest thing to that would be Al Snow's figure controversy).

He wasn't even a main event talent at the time, but he was making strides in the tag team division and as a former Intercontinental champion.

For the sake of formalities, here are all of Edge's BCA figures that I have added to VJB's official checklist.

*Note: The photos are above the descriptions, so the list begins with Superstars Series 7 Edge and ends with Backlash Series 4 Edge.

Superstars Series 7 (Edge's debut figure)

Deadly Games Series (a.k.a. the fact that most of these were repaints and only two had significantly different parts chosen (Backlash Series 3 and 4), it's surprising that there are only three straight re-releases from that list.

Superstars Series 7 3-pack (BJ's Exclusive)
Deadly Games Series 3-pack (BJ's Exclusive)
Signature Series 4 3-pack (KB Toys Exclusive)

Edge's debut BCA figure, alongside Val Venis and X-Pac, from Superstars Series 7 was released in January 1999 and his last came as late as the summer of 2001, July to be exact, when Backlash Series 4 reached KB Toys stores.

A two-and-a-half year (1999-2001) BCA figure run pales in comparison to his actual WWF/E in-ring career which lasted nearly 13 years (1998-2011).

However, we were treated to several different colored attires and one repaint that stands far above the rest.

As I did in reviewing Owen Hart's best BCA figure, I will rank Edge's best and worst figures from this particular time period.

The scores might seem low for some people, but I find that Edge's earlier figures suffer from inaccurate reused parts.

You should be able to recognize them from HHH's figure mold introduced in Superstars Series 6, and I can't just pretend that the thick sculpted belt and knee pads don't exist under a new paint application.

It's easy to see then why his last two figures, Backlash Series 3 and 4, turn up at the top of the list for their ingenuity.

Okay, they have recycled parts too, but these figures actually make sense, unusual as it sounds for two end-of-the-line, throwaway repaints from the Backlash series.

<img (1-best, 7-worst), as listed above.

Backlash Series 3 - 19/25 (The tights design is phenomenal).

Backlash Series 4 - 16.5/25 (Sure, it's primarily a Slammers Patriot body, but it fits Edge better than a bulky HHH figure).

Signature Series 3 - 15/25 (The best of the bigger Edge figures using HHH's sculpt, except with Razor legs).

Backlash Series 1 - 14.5/25 (The random black vest is a welcome addition, and it's not far removed from the #5-7 figures).
<br And, apparently, so did Jakks.

Jakks loved his proposed "gimmick" feature so much that his team, affectionately known as the "Band of Mercenaries", were given the go-ahead to begin the design process.

"This was my first [action figure] line that I designed and sculpted," Lattimer said.

With the first series in production, Terry found that the Hong Kong manufactures re-sculpted everything 2-up (a term used for the hardcopy model cast twice the size of a regular figure) and then reduced it by 50 percent for the actual mold.

Terry emphatically states this whole process made no sense to him, especially considering the licensing approvals they had received for the sculpts in the United States.

"Sculpting 2-up of your own original a/s sculpt is a challenge for the sculptor/artist that did it," Lattimer said, "to have a sculptor with no pop-culture/WWF/action figure 'knowledge' results in a ridiculous counter-productive procedure."

As a result, Terry's original prototype casts and sculpts were exactly that, prototype casts and sculpts, since they were not adhered to for the actual final product.

For example, the bridge of Superstars Series 1 Diesel's nose was a gross miscalculation that caused Terry to protest at the time (although things got better between he and Jakks).

"The final product made him look like he had a broken swollen nose!" Lattimer said.

After working on the first three Bone Crunching Action Superstars Series assortments, Terry's good fortunes took him elsewhere, but he returned in time for the rise of the Attitude Era with the likes of Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, and D-Generation X.

Terry says he had a fun time during the height of the WWF phenomenon at the turn of the century.

"[The WWF's] popularity was spreading across demographics as everyone seemed to appreciate 'what the WWF was doing' with the (now much missed) 'rude, crude attitude' with arguably the coolest group of wrestlers (and personalities) ever," Lattimer said.

In that span of time, roughly three years, Terry and his fellow excellent artists (consisting of a Master Molder, Master Painter, Master Accessories Sculptor, and Master Genius Sculptor/Designer), with the assistance of the product manager at Jakks, produced 40 lines for the company.

Impressive as it sounds, but to hear it from Terry directly is enough to make you want to salute the guy.

"For a solid three years starting from around BCA's first series ('95-'96), we were on constant deadlines - designed and sculpted from 10 a.m. to 5 a.m., crashed for five hours, and then up and at it again - seven days a week, 52 [weeks] a year, really," Lattimer said.

Still, those early WWF action figures were good times for Terry, and even he thinks their goofiness added to their charm!

"I look back on them fondly, as well as that era," Lattimer said, "It was a wild, creative, lucrative ride. Good times!"

For what it's worth, Terry says he and his team accomplished a feat of being the only group of five people within the last 20 years to create, design, sculpt, and prototype multiple action figure lines.

I'd say that's worth a damn good amount.

Until next time, thanks for looking and have a nice day!

- Alex

P.S. Well, that's usually a good thing, but how will the actual figures fair in this review?

New Age Outlaws (Road Dogg Jesse James and B.A. Billy Gunn) - 15.5/25

This little ditty was one of the more anticipated debut packs among collectors but - surprise, surprise - it didn't quite live up to expectations. The head sculpts could have been a lot better (and thankfully not a lot worse than Billy's Off The Mat boxed set figure), and then there's that whole misspelled/inaccurate script thing.

"PD" instead of "RD" on James's pants? "Mr. BA" instead of "Mr. Ass" on Billy's trunks?

Okay, I understand the reasoning behind Billy's snafu, but why could Jakks never get their Rs right from their Ps?

Fortunately, Gunn's boots showcase some of Jakks' finer attention to detail in the BCA line. I like to call it "dotting the i's and crossing the t's."

And now we're back to letters again. Didn't expect a preschool lesson today, did'ya?

Nation of Domination (Kama Mustafa and D'Lo Brown) - 16.25/25

I'd bet you didn't even have to squint your eyes to see that both torsos are the same. Now, is it any more impressive then that this was Kama's one-and-only BCA figure and he had that many tattoos graciously awarded to him? Technically, D'Lo's figure was only released twice so it, too, is special in its own way.

Kama gets the advantage here (even though the torso is a better fit for D'Lo), and both figures are slightly better than average, in my opinion.

Jerry "The King" Lawler and Brian "Too Sexy" Christopher - 15.5/25

I'll be the first to admit that this set having the same score as the NAO is a disgrace, but don't blame Jerry for his son's mistakes (literally and, well, figuratively). Jerry more than picks up the slack of his packaging partner (akin to Chyna's 2 Tuff Series 1 figure) with his crisp royal blue repaint, but Brian Christopher's debut figure is just...awful.

I wish I could put it into better words, but the whole approach is just wrong. Since when was B.C. ever that muscular? I mean, really? I don't want to know Brian Christopher's superhero backstory to explain his unnerving growth in size overnight, but I do wonder why Jakks never tried to correct the horrendous sculpt.

Granted, Christopher's tights are actually really good, surprisingly good compared to the arms and tone of the torso sculpt, but that's barely enough to save this figure from being one of the worst in the BCA line.

Kurrgan (or however his name is meant to be spelled) and The Jackyl - 19.75/25

Oh, it's good. Real good. No, not Brian Christopher's tights good. Better.

As I said last time while reviewing Rekon's 2 Tuff Series 1 figure, I also reviewed The Jackyl in my list of the BCA line's top ten one-hit wonders, and he actually made it on to the list.

If Kurrgan had fell on there, he would have been a sure bet for a top three ranking. He's a solid 21/25 for me and his score could have contended for the best yet had the torso not been so ripped beyond the point of "suspension of disbelief." There's no way I could let that slip by.

The arms are as close to perfect as you'll find, and his lower body is not far off from that distinction. Love the expression on his face and the strain in his neck, too. I kind of wish Jakks had introduced a smirking head sculpt for his later Oddities attire repaint in the Deadly Games series, but that's asking for three different head sculpts from the guy in the BCA line and I just cannot justify that.

Not even Khali got that kind of treatment in the RA line, and that's...well, not really saying much either.

Until next time, or until we all finally decide on a correct spelling for Kurrgan, thanks for looking and have a nice day!

- Alexadougl5http://www.blogger.com/profile/07192386546273810391noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1162000754344604044.post-61298197453884340932011-03-13T17:13:00.003-04:002011-03-15T01:00:52.085-04:00LVJR - A Perfect Start to Your CollectionImpeccable? Not necessarily.

Superb? Depends on who's asking.

Perfect? *Yes.

*By name, of course.

Okay, so a latest purchase of mine might not be the best thing since Sliced Bread #2, but it is a commendable assortment of ten good-to-great BCA figure representations of your favorite WWF wrestlers, circa 1999.

There's nothing "new" to speak of in the fourteenth installment of my "Latest Vintage Jakks Receivings" series of posts, with the exception of a Billy Gunn repaint and a slightly different left arm for Stone Cold (more on both later), but the Perfect 10 boxed set could be considered a perfect starter set for new collectors of the BCA line.

Or, maybe you're still trying to catch up with where you left off in late 1999 with your existing BCA collection.

Then again, you could be the author of a BCA figure blog who buys a lot of stuff he doesn't need as an excuse not to write about anything meaningful.

I just...loathe people like that.

But what I don't loathe is the opportunity to address something that comes to mind whenever I see a boxed set of figures and wonder "If those are re-releases, then where else can they be found?"

If you think like I do, then check out this breakdown of the 10 figures featured in either variation of the Perfect 10 boxed set (oh, yes, there is a box art variant).

1. Stone Cold Steve Austin - Besides Austin's semi-closed left fist replacing the original figure's open left hand, it is a re-release of the 2 Tuff Series 5 figure.

2. The Rock - It is a re-release of the Superstars Series 8 "Team Corporate" figure.

3. Triple H - It is a re-release of the DTA Tour Series 3 figure.

4. X-Pac - It is a re-release of the Fully Loaded Series 2 figure (also available: DTA Tour Series 3).

5. Mankind - It is a re-release of the Raw Is War Series figure (also available: Grudge Match with Big Show).

6. Undertaker - It is a re-release of the Superstars Series 7 figure (multiple re-issues).

7. Kane - It is a re-release of the Shotgun Saturday Night Series 2 figure (also available: Fully Loaded Series 1, 2 Tuff Series 3).

8. Road Dogg Jesse James - It is a re-release of the Deadly Games Series (a.k.a. Lattimer, Where Are You?Dear Terry,

You don't know who I am, but I am familiar with your name and all that it represents in the action figure community.

To us wrestling figure collectors, you are a visionary and the man who started it all for Jakks Pacific's Bone Crunching Action figure line.

Though you have gone on to bigger and better things since those days, many people, including myself, are still very much appreciative of your work.

There would be no Bone Crunching Action without you.

Hell, there would be no Vintage Jakks BCA blog without you.

According to your iFreelance page, you "developed the skinned joints and ratcheted sound plus did all the sculpts for (Superstars) Series One, Two and part of Three."

Without even having to go into detail about your work with the Maximum Attitude (pre-Maximum Sweat) and Titan Tron Live (TTL) figure lines, I feel it's warranted to commend you on everything that you made possible with the early Superstars Series figures.

I hope that one day I might be able to contact you to ask about your experiences as a toy designer, artist and sculptor for Jakks Pacific from 1996 to 2001.

I can only imagine what the workload must have been like, but you and your team certainly did a fantastic job in the short amount of time.

Maybe you will come across this blog post and maybe not, but I figured that it was worth the chance to reach out to whereever you are.

Thanks for all of the great memories you provided for me with the 40 Jakks Pacific figure lines you designed and sculpted, but none more than special than the one that inspired this blog.

You can reach me at my e-mail or on the WrestlingFigs.com forums, but for now I'll leave you and all of my readers with a few examples from your incredible portfolio.

Until next time, thanks for looking and have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Alexadougl5http://www.blogger.com/profile/07192386546273810391noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1162000754344604044.post-36635220600887853882011-02-28T22:33:00.002-05:002011-02-28T23:09:26.062-05:00BCA Custom Corner #6 -

Yes, there are rubber limbs for both and the "Bone Crunching Action" feature is still very much in play for the new (as of the early 2000s) figures, but they are not mirror images of one another.

For this comparison post, unfortunately, I won't be slicing into any of the figures to show you the internal workings of the parts as was done in the BCA figure line review I posted back in January.
But, I will be looking at a trio of Stone Cold Steve Austin figures (with others in the background) to demonstrate what similarities and differences exist on the surface.
The three figures shown include Superstars Series 4/5 Austin (on the left), 2 Tuff Series 4 Austin (in the middle), and Backlash Series 2 Austin (on the right). Obviously, the first two are original BCA figures and the Backlash Series Austin is from the new BCA waves.
Will there be any sort of conclusion reached by the end of this post to prove which is better? New or old?
No, not in this post.
That's up to you to decide which is better and which is worse, but I will share some of my personal opinions along the way.

Starting with the height of the figures, as you can see the original BCA figures average about 6 inches, whereas the newer figures were slightly taller at 7 inches.

The size of the newer leg parts is mostly to blame here since they were often disproportionate to the bodies of the newer BCAs. Although, the wider spacing allows for somewhat better stability in the newer style compared to many of the originals.

The 2 Tuff Series 4 Austin, for instance, proved to be a pain in setting up for the photos because of its awkward Ahmed Johnson legs and soft ankles.
It is also common for the newer BCA style figures to appear as if they are leaning forward even while standing straight, but this does not cause much of a problem unless the parts are loosened (and we all know how annoying that can be on display).

By looking at the row of arms, we can see the evolution of the parts throughout the years. There is more definition/tone in the newer figures compared to the simple sculpts of old.
Not to mention, remember all of the BCA figures with wrist tape/bands that didn't need them? Well, it's almost reversed this time around as Austin could sure use them for his newer Backlash figure.
The boots are standard issue and there is not much specification in the newer style, but the original BCAs had their own difficulties with reusing parts that didn't belong (i.e. Ahmed's legs).
With so much room for improvement, I find it sad that Jakks could never quite get it right even when they relaunch a line like they did with BCA figures. I guess the second time isn't the charm for them either.

In the original BCA line, neck articulation was very basic and not often utilized. The main advantage of the newer BCA figures is in their added neck articulation (with Bone Crunching sound, too) and it was achieved once they introduced Real Scan head sculpts to the line.
It's hard to argue against Real Scan technology whenever possible, and I'm not about to downplay the significance of it with these new BCA style figures.
When someone says that something is made or broken by a single feature, they should have gotten the inspiration from the new BCA style neck articulation. It makes the figures what they are, but beware of heads that lose it and become LOOSE in the process.
I have another Austin and a Backlash Series 3 Big Show with wobbly heads, and it's safe to say that they won't be enlisting in any "How to Take A Piledriver 101" courses this spring semester.

As for the torso piece itself, the new BCA style shrunk down a little to the size of the earlier BCA figures, except again with increased muscle tone and definition.

Below the waist, you'll see the "V" shaped crotch piece used in the new Austin figure. It is an even size in both the front and back, but it also requires additional paint on the upper thigh area unlike the others.

Personally, I prefer the look of the Austin on the left; not to make this sound any more perverted than looking at little plastic men in underwear already is, but the Superstars Series 4/5 figure has more natural curves to it.
So, yeah, if you're looking for a little junk in the trunk with the new BCA style, you're looking in the wrong place.
However, if you're looking for Randy Orton-esque smaller knee pads in the new BCA style, you've found the right place. The knee pads did shrink on the new figures, but the sculpted pads seem more appropriate with BCA style figures and thankfully aren't gaudy either.

Favoring one head sculpt over the other is merely a subjective assessment of these figures, which is not to say that doesn't apply elsewhere, but denying the accuracy of Real Scan technology is unquestionably a dumb move.
Yet, I would advise looking to the Snappin' Bashers Series Stone Cold figure instead for the best head sculpt of his in the BCA line.

Whether or not you are a fan of one particular feature or the complete body of work, there are pros and cons for both style of figures. And, of course, cons always get the most notoriety.
New? They look like they were all rolled out of the same assembly line with few distinct elements between them.
Old? Who cares if you have all of the detail in the world when the head "sculpt" looks like trash.
Therein lies the problem -- both styles have issues, but it's easier if you take them for what they're worth (well, not literally, since BCAs aren't worth a whole lot) and enjoy them for what they are.
Nothing more, nothing less.
So, which do you prefer?
Until next time, thanks for looking and have a nice day!
